Progressive rock, or "prog" for short, attempts to combine rock’s raw earthiness with the tonier forms of classical and jazz to create an "artsy" rock. (Or pretentious slop depending on your proclivities) Some of the more well-known practitioners are Yes, The Moody Blues, and Peter Gabriel-era Genesis.
