youdontseeyouwant's "Movies Referenced in Jonathan Lethem's "The Disappointment Artist""
Few writers I’ve encountered are as informed by cinema as Jonathan Lethem. His novel "Girl In Landscape" is a sci-fi rewrite of John Ford’s "The Searchers" and he has written essays for several Criterion editions ("The Killers," "Unfaithfully Yours," "Five Films by John Casavettes").
"The Disappointment Artist" is his first collection of non-fiction essays, a self-described "series of covert and not-so-covert autobiographical pieces," many of which touch on his love of cinema. One essay is dedicated to his obsessive, defensive love for "The Searchers" while another describes the summer he spent, at 13 years old, seeing "Star Wars" 21 times during its initial theatrical run. The collection also includes his Casavettes essay along with a number of other essays which are loaded with cinematic references.
