They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? - The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films

Add to my lists | Print this list

This is our sixth 21st Century listing, and it once again encompasses 250 films. It is primarily based on critics’ year-end lists (from 2000 to 2010), plus it also takes into account mentions given to any films from 2000 onwards that show up in critics’ all-time-best-of lists (that are also used for the compilation of our 1,000 Greatest Films list). Additionally, it also incorporates many best-of-the-decade lists from last year.

2012 Update in Progress — 2 weeks ago

Dropped films are off, new films have been added, but some re-ordering still needs to be done, which I will pick up tomorrow.

Untitled — 49 weeks ago

Would it be possible to include movies dropped from previous lists, maybe at the end?

January 2011 Update — 1 year ago

All done.

50%! — 1 year ago

This is a great list, really THE list for me when it comes to recent films. Not sure how much further i’ll ever get, maybe 65%? (at least until it’s updated next year) The reason being is that there are so many foreign art films, which while I LOVE in moderation are hard to watch often. I really have to prep myself to watch films that are supposed to be slow and meticulously shot.

Anybody else working through this intriguing list?

My turn to be a pretentious asshole — 1 year ago

How could Shrek make it two steps above Silent Light?!!!

All done — 2 years ago

Reordered the last 100.

Implementing Update — 2 years ago

Done to 150, all additions and deletions made. The remaining 100 need to be reordered, that’s all.

Flight of the Red Balloon — 2 years ago

This was an homage to the classic Red Balloon, but unfortunately it’s not even 1/4 as good as that short movie and this was a full length. It was dull, stretched out, didn’t have any conflicts, the plot lacked a lot of substance and it tried to be art, which it wasn’t. It does not deserve a place on here. Period.

SPIDERMAN 2 — 2 years ago

WHAT ON EARTHAREYOU ON???

Even Sam Raimi knows this is awful!
