And what in the world is The Motherland of Electricity? I’ve never heard of it. Imdb doesn’t list it as a Shepitko film, and a quick Google search reveals only that it is one of the favorite films of the Brothers Quay. Any idea of the original title??

And thanks for mentioning Descendant of the Snow Leopard, which I hadn’t included on the big list (now added).

Thanks for the mention!

From that list I’d most highly recommend Chapayev, which to my mind is sort of the uber-Soviet film, and The Irony of Fate, a movie that gives light romantic comedies a good name. The Lady with the Lapdog is exceptional, but Zvenigora is totally abstruse (then again, as you’re a fan of Sayat Nova …). I’d also recommend Walking the Streets of Moscow and Carnival Night heartily.

My Friend Ivan Lapshin is one I’ve been trying to see for years (and just missed during a recent Russian films revival at Lincoln Center). And there are quite a few on your list that, shamefully, have still eluded me. But that’s why I made that big list: not to show off what I have seen, but to lay out what I want to see.
