The Unknown is available under the title of the Lon Chaney Collection.
If you can not find a title on Netflix (because they suck), try GreenCine.com. They are a California based rental company specializing in hard to find Cinephilia. They also have an option to early return, meaning you can tell them when you’ve mailed back a film you’ve seen, and they will instantly send the next in your queue. It speeds up turnaround time considerably.
Madam de… aka The Earrings of Madam de… is soon to be released on dvd and is available on NF.
So, the list is now updated. These are all the films that Netflix doesn’t mention. Most of these film are not on DVD at this time.
I will add movies maked ‘saved’ with release dates unknown soon.
Thanks for your support! :)
Also, from the TOP 100:
Madame de …
Voyage in Italy
Last Year at Marienbad
Greed
Letter from an Unknown Woman — This last one they had listed as requiring a long wait. I put it at the top of my queue and waited. After months, they finally sent it to me and even though the listing was for the Ophuls film, they sent me a recent Asian film of the same title. I sent it back to them and alerted them to the mistake, and their response was to change the status of the Ophuls film to unavailable!
Also:
Napoleon
A Woman Under the Influence
Faces
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Opening Night
(These Cassavetes films are particularly frustrating as they ARE currently available on North American DVD. Netflix had them as status unknown, but recently shifted that status to unavailable (translation: we haven’t bought them yet, and we don’t plan to). To me these movies represent a sea change at Netflix, a decision to scale back somewhat, not to buy all the art-house releases, even if they are major U.S. milestones, but to take a step in the direction of the safer, mountains-of-mediocrity, traditional approach of Blockbuster.)
Shoeshine
Blood Simple
Human Condition trilogy
Les Vampires
Do Bigha Zamin (Is that on TSPDT?)
Perceval
Room at the Top
Shame (This they had listed as available until it reached the top of my queue, whereupon it switched to unavailable!)
Triumph of the Will
The Gospel According to St. Matthew
Many, many others.
