jillelvish's "First Titles in Superb Fictional Series"
If you want to read some super-duper series, just do an Amazon Search for any one of these titles. Every one of titles kicks off a series, some long, some short. I consider "The Hobbit" the first book in the Lord of the Rings series and "The Magician’s Nephew" the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia, because of publication order, but others disagree. When in doubt, I go with the order in which the author wrote the material (usually that’s the publication order, but not always!)
I also highly recommend the series of stories about Jeeves and Wooster (P. G. Wodehouse) and Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle), and the two Agatha Christie series starring Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. All of these are mixtures of novels and short stories. They can be looked up in Wikipedia for their order of publication.
Series I haven’t started yet, but plan to read, are the Master and Commander series by Patrick O’Brian and the Horatio Hornblower series by C. S. Forester.
