David Thomson lists Ivan the Terrible Parts I & II together, they have a single entry here but he also combines Abel Gance’s two versions of J’Accuse! as one entry. I have them here as two unless someone wants to change it so both are as one entry.

I would also like to personally endorse this book. Glaring omissions are present, but they are intentionally left off for lesser know gems. He states in the introduction that he wanted old favorites to neighbor films you’ve never heard of. This approach definately adds to the reading experience. There is also a write up about the book in the September/October edition of Film Comment.
His selection is not only of personal favourites but includes plenty of well-known or important films he’s not too keen on at the expense of some he likes a lot more. He’s very weak on Africa, Latin America, parts of Asia; he’s really a Hollywood and classics guy. He loves Renoir, Hawks, Mizoguchi, not keen on Ford and Fellini. But once you get past the limitations, the book is marvellous- superbly written and brimming with the knowledge and confidence from so many years’ experience. Highly recommended.
