2010 Paperback Edition — 1 year ago

Five movies were added to the 2010 paperback edition—Birth (2004), Faithless (2000), Red Riding (2009), The Thin Red Line (1998) & Zulu (1964).

At least three were removed—The Big Red One (1980), The Thomas Crowne Affair (1968) & Zabriskie Point (1970). There must be two more, since there are still 1000 films listed in the 2010 edition, but I haven’t found them.

More than 1000 films — 3 years ago

David Thomson lists Ivan the Terrible Parts I & II together, they have a single entry here but he also combines Abel Gance’s two versions of J’Accuse! as one entry. I have them here as two unless someone wants to change it so both are as one entry.

His selection is not only of personal favourites but includes plenty of well-known or important films he’s not too keen on at the expense of some he likes a lot more. He’s very weak on Africa, Latin America, parts of Asia; he’s really a Hollywood and classics guy. He loves Renoir, Hawks, Mizoguchi, not keen on Ford and Fellini. But once you get past the limitations, the book is marvellous- superbly written and brimming with the knowledge and confidence from so many years’ experience. Highly recommended.
