RIAA's "Grammy Hall of Fame Recordings"

Add to my lists | Print this list

The Grammy Hall of Fame Award is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old and that have "qualitative or historical significance". They are given by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Many of these were awarded for specific songs rather than the album as a whole. The original list noted when it was a single that was honored instead of the complete album. The original maintainer also chose to list the year of RELEASE of each honoree…rather than the year the RIAA decided to enshrine them in the Hall.

Changed to the version by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra with Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting to match the source.

I don’t think the Bach: Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould) linked is the correct version? That one was re-recorded in ‘81. I think it’s maybe this one? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000025TP

#543 — 2 years ago

This would be Wagner – Der Ring des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) with Sir Georg Solti conducting the Vienna Philharmonic on London Records but I’m not sure of the correct date since the source list shows links to both 1958 and 1967. It was inducted by the RIAA in 1998. Anyone who knows the correct info can feel free to enter the year…and correct the link if needed.

would be useful to know the years of each of these—often there are several very different versions of the same song/piece by the same artist. i’m too lazy to do it, but perhaps someone else?

Attention classical music aficionados — 3 years ago

I’ll confess my lack of knowledge of classical music so those who are more literate in that arena are invited to check and correct the items here that pertain to the “dead European white guy” music. :)

In many of these cases I’m sure I selected the correct aria/piece/conductor but maybe selected a disc of the wrong vintage to match up with what the RIAA folks had in mind.
