François Truffaut's films of Antoine Doinel

In September 1958, Truffaut placed an advert in France-Soir looking for a 13 year-old boy to be the protagonist of his first film. He had just finished writing the screenplay for a film intended to be the story of a boys 13th year considered not with nostalgia but simply as a bad moment to go through. After auditioning around 60 boys, the part was given to Jean-Pierre Léaud. According to Truffaut, Léaud, like Doinel, was solitary and introverted but, unlike the character, the young actor was not an avid reader. You had the impression, Truffaut observed in 1970, that he would more readily steal a Ray Charles record than a book by Pléiade.
