wokelstein's "Good Movies that Roger Ebert gave One and a half stars or less to"

Add to my lists | Print this list

Yes, when Ebert hates something it usually sucks. But I think this list shows that my taste leans a little more toward the grotesque and transgressive than his own. It’s my personal opinion and while I don’t think that indicates I’m not willing to argue in favor of any of these choices I do want to invite others to create their own lists like these.

5/10 A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) added.

Good one. — 2 years ago

Timely, too—after watching Swing Vote and Up nearly back to back yesterday, I immediately started thinking of doing something of my own along the lines of Crap Movies That Armond White Likes and Would Claim Are Better Than There Will Be Blood or something to that effect. But White’s insistent contrarianism would probably render that a pointless exercise, as what is the purpose of pointing out the perversity of things that everyone already disagrees with anyway?

Ebert’s negative reviews of debatably valuable films are therefore considerably more damning as a result, and thus more worthy of discussion. Most of the films you list here have solid followings despite Ebert’s pans, sure, but whether they represent him going against the critical grain (Blue Velvet) or revealing his biases (pretty much any horror film listed above), Ebert is an important enough figure that his reviews are part of their legacies.

That said, expect that you will have to answer for Coneheads, The Good Son and Hocus Pocus.
