"On the eve of the release of ‘Whatever Works,’ the 40th movie Woody Allen has directed, I thought it would be fun to rank every single one of his films in order of quality, from the sublime to the wretched. Don’t be shy about arguing with these choices—that’s what lists like this are for. I do regret that I had to leave one of my all-time favorites, ‘Play It Again, Sam,’ off the list, but Woody didn’t direct it; Herbert Ross did.
