I finally figured out — 2 years ago

Why listmakers always have such a diversity of directors – because when you realize you’ve left off some of your favorite directors (Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Howard Hawks, and Roman Polanski, in my case) because you just love the Coen Brothers, Kubrick, and David Lynch just a little more, you feel bad, and you want to represent that side of your tastes – but the “top 50” puts a cutoff on that. If we went on to top 100, 200, etc. you’d see a wider range of taste, naturally.
