Bad Cinema Society's "The Worst Films of the 20th Century"

Add to my lists | Print this list

On June 16, 1998, the American Film Institute announced its choices for the 100 greatest films ever made. The group called its list 100 Years, 100 Movies. To no one’s surprise, just about everybody in America disagreed with the titles on the list. Anybody can make a list of great movies. We [The Bad Cinema Society] thought it would be helpful if a group had the guts to put together a list of the all-time worst films. So, about a month after the AFI announcement, the Hastings Bad Cinema Society announced that it too would be making an "end of the century" list, but the 100 movies it planned to "honor" would all be stinkers.

As a lover of all things horror, I’m slightly disturbed that Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Weekend at Bernie’s are on the same list. What about the subsequent TCM movies that really were awful? I don’t think this list is fair at all… I’d really like to know how these movies were selected.

Apparently Mars Attacks was very funny-in a random way, but to me it sounds crack up. Titanic is 1 movie i would NEVER EVER see. i am suprised to find that Krall or the Kingdom of Krall or something like that isn’t on there. it is definately 1 of the worst movies i have ever had the misfortune to see part of. the acting was horrible and it was SOOOO corny!!!!!

Personally, I loved Drop Dead Fred – and although I haven’t seen many of these movies, most of the ones I have seen were at least watchable. They’re definitely not the worst I’ve seen!

Criteria? — 3 years ago

I’d love to see the criteria they used to choose these. I certainly think Titanic was truly dreadful but it seems like the general public adored it… And if you’ve ever seen “All Surf Nazis Must Die”, you know it should be #1 on this list.

I dont think.. — 3 years ago

Titanic should be here. Titanic won 7 oscars making it tie with Ben Hur and LOTR: Return of the King as the film with the most oscar wins. I really don’t see how it was bad enough to be compared with the likes of Police Academy 7. Seriously. I think they got that one wrong.

I agree — 3 years ago

Some of the selections seem odd. While there are many films on this list that virtually everyone would agree are bad, I would say some of the movies are more misunderstood than awful. Aren’t films like Crossroads, Gigli, and Glitter deserving of a label like worst films? Where are these?

I’m kind of surprised how many of these I’ve seen, but it’s safe to say I’m not going to be working towards 100% on this one.

What about the Indian Runner with Viggo Mortensen? That has to be the worst movie I’ve ever seen.
