Please note that the properties of the world heritage list can include very large areas and diverse places. The City of Rome is for example only inscribed as one property on it (site 91). This property includes all of Romes marvels from it’s modern baroque churches to it’s great the Roman monuments…

St.Peters and other treasures of Vatican City are actually not listed under Italy on the world heritage list but under The Holy See. As they are in Rome however, they may well be listed here (as the Vatican City, site 286).

It might also be worth mentioning that the Vatican City’s listing under the Holy See may be a bit misleading as the Holy See is actually not a state and certainly not a place; It’s the governing body of the Catholic Church and is quite separate from the Vatican City State. There is no way of entering it other than becoming an influential catholic bishop or cardinal. ;D

This list is, like other world heritage lists, sorted by date of ascension.
