Slant Magazine's Best Films of the Aughts (2000s)

Add to my lists | Print this list

To tidily summarize a decade in world cinema is to attempt the impossible, yet if there’s one overriding theme of Slant’s Top 100 of the aughts, it’s that despite a mainstream movie culture dedicated to increasingly expensive, techno-enabled infantilism, auteurist artistry and genre craftsmanship remain vital filmmaking avenues.

Finished 4/20/10 — 2 years ago

Someone had only added the first 16, so I stepped in and took care of business.

Pretty bold list: the top 2 are Lynch’s 2 films of the decade, plus War of the Worlds and Aqua Teen Hunger Force (although I haven’t seen it). Plus, I can’t believe they rate Femme Fatale so highly; Mulholland Dr. had already perfected and pushed the envelope with the same sort of film.

What’s everybody else think?
