mkay17's "Empowering Women's Films"

I need help with this one. I need all the movies I can possibly get. This is NOT a chick flick list, this is a list of films that have represented women who demonstrate strong willpower and competence. For years on end Hollywood has been relying on the marketability of strong leading roles for men, and let’s not even start with how women have been portrayed the lesser-thans whose only purposes seem to always concern caring for, worrying about, having nothing better to think about than men. They keep saying that times are changing, and yet I can only think of 5 movies where women are represented as competent individuals for reasons OTHER than appealing to a horny male audience (Tomb Raider- don’t put it on the list.) Whether Hollywood ever undergoes a revolution or not, we’ve got to value the few movies out there that set a good example. Add whatever you think is appropriate. I’ll appreciate it- a lot.

They don’t even have to have women who begin strong in particularly every movie, just as long as it relates to the same theme, perhaps representing the struggles women go through to approach realizations of their capabilities. An Education, for example- Carrey Mulligan begins as a young women drawn to the appeal of many women stereotyped in the 60’s but undergoes disappointments that cause her to reevaluate her role as a woman. Interpret it in your own way- any film that represents strong women to YOU.
