This list comprises internationally acclaimed films that are over 4 hours long. These are the films that most cinephiles plan to see in their lifetimes, but that are often put off due to their length. These are to movies, what Proust’s In Search of Time Lost, Joyce’s Ulysses and Tolstoy’s War and Peace are to literature. Milestones, rites of passages.
(Some of these were either made for, or shown on, television first, but they are nevertheless regarded as great cinematic achievements by most film critics, historians and film buffs.)
