Star Ocean (video game series)
Created by developer tri-Ace in 1996, the Star Ocean series has always stood out amongst the common fantasy-themed Japanese role-playing genre in that it is heavily influenced by science fiction, notably the Star Trek series. Although it has never gained the same level of popularity as the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games, Star Ocean has a very dedicated cult following.
Each game of the series shares a number of traits with its predecessor, notably the real-time, free-roaming battles, in-depth item creation system, large cast of characters, and multiple ending vignettes that warrant multiple playthroughs.
The complete list of games includes those not released outside of Japan – namely the original Super Famicom release and Star Ocean: Blue Sphere. They are (perhaps) playable in English via emulation, and are included for the sake of completion.
