English PEN's "The Bigger Read"

Add to my lists | Print this list

English PEN has decided to launch its own alternative to the Big Read, which reflects our favourite literature from all over the world. We aim to inspire people to read literature from other countries, about people, places and cultures they might not know, and which they come to discover through books. Originally written in languages from all over the world, these books have made an impression on us in one way or another. We hope you’ll agree that they have all – in one way or another – made a significant contribution towards cultural development.

Number 44 should read “soil”, not “soul”.

Fixed... — 4 years ago

I just noticed that the version of The Three Musketeers (at #25) listed here was an abridged version, which is obviously wrong, so I changed that.

Sorry to mess people up a little…

Missing — 4 years ago

Orhan Pamuk’s The Black Book and My Name is Red were missing, so I added those. Also changed Goytisolo to Count Julian (Goytisolo is the author’s name, not the title on the list) and changed In Search of Lost Time to the whole thing, not just Vol. 1.
