Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow
According to wikipedia, there are five distinct story arcs in the series: Arc 1 = book 1; arc 2 = books 2 and 3. The third arc, the ‘Alliance of Light’ covers books 4-8. The two-book arc 4, ‘Sword of the Canon’, has just had its first half published.
