Cinema4Pylon's "The Tower of Film: Films to See from 1966"
This is the third year in my Tower of Film viewing project, a personal journey through cinema created and/or released during my lifetime. The films were selected from all feature-length Oscar nominees and winners, Cannes selections, the "Cult Film" series of author Danny Peary, and even Golden Turkey and Razzie Award nominees and winners, along with other assorted sources.
The attempt was to not only include critically acclaimed and important films from each year, but to also include the worst, or even the controversial, for no snapshot of a given year is correct unless it includes as diverse a selection as possible. The result is not scientific in the least, nor did I want it to be, for there is a tendency for lists which adhere too closely to only the critically acclaimed to also appear antiseptic, or worse, dull and lifeless. I also reserved the right to add new films to each year, outside of my selection process, in order to allow for flexibility in viewing. In order for me to mark a film as seen, I need to have seen it since 2005, even if I have seen that particular film numerous times before.
This is an extremely personal project, and it probably only makes sense to me, but it has been working in allowing me to get a greater sense of the breadth of filmmaking in my lifetime. I will likely never be finished in either adding to each year’s list or in the completion of seeing every film in any of them, owing to the obscurity of certain titles. If this seems like a fun journey to you as well, I invite you to join me, or to leave your comments.
