Roger Ebert - Four Star Reviews of the 2000s

Add to my lists | Print this list

This is a roughly chronological list of all of the four-star films released between 2000-2009 that Roger Ebert reviewed.

NOTES:

It does not include films added to his Great Movies list from previous decades, but does include an older title if it had an official re-release in theaters (e.g. the Imax version of Apollo 13).

Movies that were released as more than one version are given here as the version closest to what Mr. Ebert reviewed. For the most part, that means the version not promoted as an "unrated" edition is the one listed. In a few cases, that means listing the IMAX edition of a movie instead of a widely-available video version.

Eros is an anthology of three short films. Mr. Ebert’s review (http://xrl.us/bjxwo) gave Wong Kar-Wai’s "The Hand" four stars, Steven Soderbergh’s "Equilibrium" three stars, and Michelangelo Antonioni’s "The Dangerous Thread of Things" one star.

Note that in 2006, Roger Ebert’s website began publishing reviews written by the site’s editor-in-chief, Jim Emerson. Those reviews are not included here. Also, additions made to Ebert’s Great Movie List are not included, nor are reposted reviews from decades past.

Well, he seems easily pleased!

i am pretty sure he rated this 4 stars.

Ebert seeing stars? — 5 years ago

Holy cow. Roger Ebert published four-star reviews for six movies all in one day:

That must be unprecedented for him. Heck, that must be unprecedented for any critic.

If you count his four-star review for the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, that makes seven four-star reviews within a week!

Yeah, I think he specifically reviewed the IMAX films in those cases. I deleted The Descent because that was an Emerson review.

Why the Imax versions? — 6 years ago

I’m curious (without going and looking for myself) where the IMAX versions of the films added to the list because those were the ones Ebert specifically gave 4 stars to?

Roger Ebert vs. Jim Emerson — 6 years ago

Someone caught this before I did! When adding new four-star reviews, take care to ensure that they were indeed written by Roger Ebert, not Jim Emerson (who writes some reviews for rogerebert.com). Thanks!
