The Criterion Collection

Add to my lists | Print this list

Established in 1984, the Criterion Collection is dedicated to gathering together the "important classic and contemporary films" from around the world. The volumes they publish (originally as laserdiscs, switching to DVD in 1998) are known for their extremely high quality transfers and abundance of supplemental features. They have done much to set the stage for the ubiquity of multi-disk and "special" edition DVDs today, but continue to rise above most other releases and produce what are considered to be the definitive editions of some of our greatest films. (In order by spine number.)

Added Covers to Some — 26 weeks ago

I added covers to some of the recent ones but then I noticed that they were being cropped into squares, rather than appear in proper DVD cover proportions. I wonder why that is… All the others seem fine.

Added three more:

411 Berlin Alexanderplatz
412 Sawdust and Tinsel

I don’t know why it keeps listing this title as “W” This is in fact Tarkovsky’s film, “Ivan’s Childhood.”

I added pictures for most of the entries that were missing them.

I see both points — 1 year ago

I do think it’s overkill to have the multi-disk collections listed as seperate entries. However, since Criterion has given the collections spine numbers I think we should leave those collections on this list, because it will be easier to update when there are new releases if the Listsofbests numbers correspond exactly with the numbers on the Criterion spines. This site lsts the releases by spine numbers:

http://www.criterionco.com/asp/browse.asp?sort=spine

I see Perlle’s point, too, so I will join both lists. It’s just a question of personal preference.

I think it’s fine to make minor changes to public lists, but if you want to make major changes or are getting into fights about the changes it’s probably best to just create a different list and people can pick one or the other or both, and everyone can be peaceful and happy.

updates — 1 year ago

Updated list to include all Criterion releases announced.

I added back the “overkill” titles another user had deleted to keep the numbering consistent with the official Criterion numbering. It also makes it much easier to check if titles are out of order, so please do not delete titles again.
