New York Times - Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made (1999 ed.)

Add to my lists | Print this list

This list refers to the 1999 first edition of "The New York Times Guide to the Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made" edited by Peter M. Nichols. The book contains reviews from Vincent Canby, Janet Maslin and others as they originally appeared in print. Fun to see some now-revered classic movies elicit a negative or non-plussed review.

Note: I spent A LOT of time creating this list directly from the book. I have tried to use the DVD edition that is currently in print or the Criterion edition and will continue to keep it up to date. Please don’t change any of the items on this list just for fun.

Does this list have the right films in these two cases?

The General — the Buster Keaton silent film is much more famous

The Fly (1958) — the Cronenberg remake is better
