I think the Lola from Fassbinder is wrong. Fassbinder’s Lola was made in 1981, and this is clearly situated among movies made around 1960-61, which leads me to believe that it is Jacques Demy’s Lola from 1961 that is the right one.

Fixed... — 6 weeks ago

Someone removed The Big Lebowski and added Tetsuo in its place. I checked my copy of the book and Tetsuo was not in it (strangely, it was in the index which referred me to the page that contained only Big Lebowski & The Celebration ?). But since it wasn’t in the book’s list, I went ahead and deleted it and added The Big Lebowski back in its rightful place.

Rear Window — 21 weeks ago

Just removed Rear Window at position 1002, since it is already on the list (no. 274).

Lola — 30 weeks ago

Fassbinder’s Lola is listed here at 372. That movie was made in the early 80s, so it is out of place here. Either the chronology is off, or it should be Jacques Demy’s Lola.

Made a couple changes — 1 year ago

Just letting everyone know I changed a couple things: I added the new DVD release of La Roue (The Wheel) and deleted the old version. I also did the same with She Done Him Wrong. Hope I haven’t screwed anything up – I’m a newbie here :) What is the preferred way to update/edit titles for new DVD releases, etc.?

Just an FYI... — 1 year ago

TMC is a boon for old films this month – since it’s Oscar month, they’re showing just about everything that was ever nominated for an Oscar. With a DVR, this lessens Netflix/Library waiting times considerably.

I have a rather healthy spreadsheet (someone borrowed it to create a stripped-down version for the 2007 version) that does link to tvguide.com listings.

Notes on some hard to find films — 1 year ago

Stanley Kwan’s “The Actress” at no. 851 (book p. 822) is not called by that title in the DVD release, but rather you will find it under the title Centre Stage (with the British spelling). (amazon)

If you can, watch the 2004 Director’s Cut verion which puts back over 30 minutes cut by the studio from the original release.

Also, Pasazerka (no. 401) is available on a R2 DVD from Second Run DVD as are The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short ( De Man die zijn haar kort liet knippen ) (no. 446), David Holzman’s Diary, Ucho, and Marketa Lazarova. They will be putting out a new version of Jancso’s masterpiece, Roundup, in the Spring.

There are three films by Taiwanese master director Hou hsiao-hsien on the list. The Puppetmaster (no. 859) is available in an R1 DVD, though Fox Lorber have inexplicably butchered it with an inferior, full framed transfer. It is available via Netflix.

Time to Live, Time to Die and City of Sadness are both hard to find on DVD with western language subtitles. There was a nice box set of early Hou films with English subtitles, now out of print. You can check at yesasia.com to get info about it.

If enough people sign up there, perhaps the distributor Sino Movies will reissue the box set.

And finally, Bengali master Ritwik Ghatak has two films on the list. The BFI has put out a very nice DVD of Meghe Dhaka Tara, but not Subarnarekha. One place to find this is Calcuttaweb.com who specialize in Bengali language materials; they are located in the US.
